Born Michel Dabaghi on September 7, 1908, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Lebanese immigrant parents, Michael Ellis DeBakey would become one of the most influential cardiovascular surgeons in history. His mother’s sewing skills and his father’s pharmacy introduced him early to precision, care, and medicine.
🏫 Tulane: Campus of Innovation
Michael E. DeBakey earned his BS (1930), MD (1932), and MS (1935) at Tulane University in New Orleans. As a medical student, he invented a roller pump that laid the groundwork for the heart-lung machine, enabling open-heart surgery.

After surgical residency at Charity Hospital, he furthered his training in Strasbourg and Heidelberg, returning to Tulane's faculty in 1937, where he collaborated on early research linking smoking and lung cancer.

During World War II, DeBakey led the Surgical Consultants Division in the Army Surgeon General’s Office. He spearheaded Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH units) and helped shape the Veterans Administration medical system.

He performed over 60,000 surgeries and published more than 1,600 articles during his career.

In 1948, DeBakey joined Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, becoming Chair of Surgery, then President (1969–79), and Chancellor (1979–96). He was instrumental in elevating the institution’s global stature.
